When the principal dentist decided to combine her passion for old houses with her dream of setting up her own dental clinic, the results were even more spectacular than she could ever have imagined and it seems Melbourne's famous Brunswick Street will be all the better for it. Thanks to a sympathetic renovation, the former Westminster Hotel has been transformed into Fitzroy Dental practice.

The grand old building, built around the turn of the century, which was tastefully renovated, is close to the local cafe strip and almost backs onto St Vincent's Hospital.

The challenge was to design a work space which retained the grand character of the building, yet accommodated the latest dental equipment to provide state of the art care to patients.

The appeal doesn't end with the old world charm of the rambling hallway and reception area, but continues into the treatment rooms which also feature polished floorboards, attractive paintings, fresh flowers and pretty curtains.

Clever design and a bit of forethought has created a novel and workable solution comprising two A-dec 500 chair packages equipped with W&H handpieces in two adjoining treatment rooms. The treatment rooms are connected by a roller shutter concealing a shared Kodak X-Ray machine serving both rooms as needed. This will aid turnaround times as Anh can be working in one surgery while the other is being set up for a new patient. Anh's aim is to work in both surgeries with the assistance of a full time hygienist.

The choice of equipment was an important consideration in setting up her dream practice, but Anh says for her the decision was actually quiet easy.

"I've been privileged to work in some good practices and learned a lot about dentistry and hygiene protocols that you can't learn from a text book. Over the past eight years I have worked a lot with A-dec equipment, so I'm familiar with it, it's efficient, reliable and it looks great."

Anh's preference is for an uncluttered chair and she has worked extensively with A-dec's 'traditional' delivery system which she finds the most natural way for her to work.

"I think it's far better to stick with something you know as you should be concentrating on your patient and not having to keep looking at the equipment. The traditional system has all the controls within easy reach and there are handpieces for every procedure all mounted on the chair."

The chair package includes the latest Sopro 717 intra-oral camera and shade matching system which makes great use of the chair mounted monitor.

The latest A-dec 500 electronic touchpad has an in-bulti 'Endodontic' function and is mated to the powerful and lightweight EA-51LT electric micromotor for precise torque control.

Anh's only concession to the building was the choice of a chair-mounted light and monitor because of the height of the ceiling (some four metres or more high) and the beautiful hundred year old ceiling roses.

She also splashed out on the 'plush' upholstery option and the choice of Marine & Hunter (blue and green) for the chair coverings contrast nicely with the cream coloured walls and reflects some of the hand-painted details of the ceiling roses and decorative cornices above.

"Even the patients come in and say "wow" when they see the new chairs - they look comfortable and they are, and they're also easy to keep clean," Anh commented.

Backing up the two treatment rooms is a central sterilization room equipped with the latest W&H Lisa 500 sterilizer. There is also a well equipped staff kitchen, bathroom and storage rooms.

One of the more novel features of the building is a trap door in the polished floor boards concealing a staircase down to a roomy cellar which houses a large Cattani air compressor. Despite being quite close to the treatment rooms the under-floor location of the compressor means it is virtually silent in operation.
